Description

William L Curry served in companies K and M of the First Ohio Calvary. The First Ohio Calvary was organized for three years service in 1861 at Camp Chase and was mustered in as a regiment on October 5, 1861. Lieutenant Curry was taken prisoner July 25, 1862, at Courtland, Alabama, after being shot by a Minnie ball, which passed through his hat, cutting the ornamental sabers on the front in two and leaving him uninjured.

This exhibit will feature Curry’s bullet-damaged hat, his Civil War uniform, revolver, haversack, powder flasks in addition to a Sharps carbine, saber, spurs and canteen.

Curry served as Sergeant, was promoted to Second Lieutenant in June 1862, was captured in July 1862, promoted to First Lieutenant in December 1862, and was mustered out in December 1864. In 1898 he published, Four Years in the Saddle: History of the First Regiment Ohio Volunteer Cavalry.
