The Ohio Statehouse Museum Education Center recently obtained an authentic chandelier by Cornelius & Baker of Philadelphia, thanks to a generous donation.
While this specific one was not a part of the 1861 Statehouse, the ones in the Senate and House Chambers are replicas of the original ones made by Cornelius & Baker.
Background Information:
This is a chandelier created by Cornelius and Baker, a manufacturing company that was located at 181 Cherry Street, Philadelphia, PA. They were a company that produced lamps, gas fixtures, etc. The company was founded in 1810 by Christian Cornelius. In its heyday, the company employed over 550 people and had grown significantly in a short period of time.
While this specific one was not a part of the Statehouse that was built in 1861, the chandeliers that were a part of the Statehouse were made by Cornelius & Baker. These chandeliers came from a residence, a historic Dakota condo in New York City, where John Lennon lived among other well-known people. They were once meticulously restored approximately 40 years ago by an expert whose shop was on E 57th Street, New York City.
