US & THEM WITHOUT FRONTIERS is an exhibit to honor the history and contributions of people from Slovenia. 2021 was the 30th anniversary of Slovenia's independence from Yugoslavia.
This exhibition is designed to explore what it means to be Slovenian or American, or to be a migrant or an immigrant. It describes the migration of people and the transfer of ideas.
The display will be opened on Wednesday, April 6, 2022 at 3:15 p.m. in the North Hallway near the office of the Governor. It is presented courtesy of the Consulate General of the Republic of Slovenia, Cleveland, and was created by the Technical Museum of Slovenia.
Interesting fact: Cleveland has the largest population of Slovenians in the world outside of Slovenia. Slovenians have been settling in Ohio since the 1880s.
ABOUT THE EXHIBITION
The tour of the Us & Them without Frontiers exhibition to the United States coincides with the 30th anniversary of Slovenia’s independence. In 1991, Slovenia for the first time ever became truly independent as a country.
While the concept of Slovenia has existed since around the 6th century, it was always part of something bigger – the two best-known examples being the Habsburg Empire and Yugoslavia.
This exhibition is designed to ask questions about what it means to be Slovenian or American, to be a migrant or an immigrant or any of the words (some nice, some not so nice) used to describe the migration of people and the transfer of ideas.
The original project of the Technical Museum of Slovenia named Knowledge Without Frontiers was dedicated to fourteen successful individuals across different fields of science and technology who migrated to or from Slovenian territory from the 16th century to the present day.
RELEVANCE TO THE USA
The exhibition Us & Them without Frontiers is a focused version exploring the fascinating connections between our two nations and the benefits that have resulted from the shared knowledge.
We are presenting those individuals who have a strong and direct connection to the USA: astronaut Sunita Williams, Voyager engineer Anton Mavretic, professor of experimental physics Anton Peterlin, planet hunter Marija Strojnik, professor of electronics Aleš Strojnik, the pioneer of Silicon Valley France Rode and inventor Peter Florjancic. While Herman Potocnik Noordung never visited the USA, he was a pioneer of space technology and influenced and inspired the next generations of scientist in this field.
