Before Lexington and Concord, there was Lord Dunmore’s War. In the prelude to revolution, the battle for the western frontier and the desire for colonial expansion formed and defined the land we now call Ohio. Over the subsequent decades, the British and newly-forged Americans would contest this land, with the native peoples serving as allies, enemies, or simply proxies for a territorial conflict that would inevitably lead to the loss of their homelands. This era saw the rise of renowned leaders such as Logan, Cornstalk, Blue Jacket and Tecumseh, pitted against Colonial military men like the Earl of Dunmore, “Mad” Anthony Wayne, and future American President William Henry Harrison. It’s a story of shifting alliances, unlikely victories, embarrassing defeats and negotiated peace.
