The Capitol Square Review and Advisory Board (CSRAB) will commemorate the 20th anniversary of the attacks of September 11, 2001 with a memorial flag display on the west lawn of the Ohio Statehouse. A short program will begin Thursday, September 9 at 4 p.m. on the west steps of the Ohio Statehouse and will feature remarks from Governor Mike DeWine and others. After the program, volunteers from across central Ohio will install the 2,977 flags that comprise the memorial.
The Ohio Statehouse has been the venue for the annual 9/11 memorial from 2002 through 2019. The flags represent the 2,977 victims of the September 11, 2001 attacks on the World Trade Center, the Pentagon and United Airlines Flight 93. When seen from above, the design represents the World Trade Center towers, with a space in the shape of the Pentagon and an open strip representing the field in Pennsylvania. Located on the West Lawn of the Ohio Statehouse, the memorial will be open to the public from 7 p.m. Thursday, September 9 until 12 p.m. Monday, September 13.
The September 9 program will include brief remarks by several dignitaries including:
Director Deborah Ashenhurst, Ohio Department of Veterans Services
Senator Hearcel Craig, Ohio Senate District 15, Capitol Square Review and Advisory Board
Governor Mike DeWine
Central Ohio District Director Jason Knox for U.S. Senator Rob Portman
Ohio Secretary of State Frank LaRose
Franklin County Commissioner Erica C. Crawley, and
Columbus Fire Chief Jeffrey Happ
The flag display is a memorable and moving scene on the Ohio Statehouse lawn. The volunteers installing the flags include firefighter recruits from the Columbus Fire Training Academy, employees of COTA and the State of Ohio, veterans and many individuals. The flags will be checked daily by volunteers.
Note: After the installation, CSRAB will post an overhead photo of the flag display on our website,

The Atrium - before and after
UPDATE: Ticket information is available on the
CSF website by clicking here.
The Capitol Square Foundation (CSF) and the Capitol Square Review and Advisory Board (CSRAB) will host a celebratory event for the 25th Anniversary of the renovation of the Ohio Statehouse. The culmination of remembrances will be held on November 17, 2021 in the Rotunda and Atrium of the Statehouse.
In 1989, a seven-year monumental restoration of the Statehouse and Judiciary Annex began, which returned the building to its former grandeur and added new structures including the Atrium, a beautiful, covered passageway between the Statehouse and the Annex building. This fall, the CSF and the CSRAB will commemorate the 25th anniversary of the completion of the multi-year, multimillion dollar project that brought the Statehouse back from the brink of ruin to the historic symbol of democracy it represents today.
Current and former members of the General Assembly and previous administration officials will be invited for an open house to celebrate this accomplishment. The event is scheduled from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Further details will be released soon.
About the Capitol Square Foundation
The Capitol Square Foundation was established in 1987 as part of the complete renovation of the Ohio Statehouse. In 2009, the CSF with the Capitol Square Review and Advisory Board (CSRAB) opened the Statehouse Museum. Among many milestones in the development of the Museum, the CSF, the CSRAB and the Ohio History Connection opened a new exhibit bringing the original 1802 and 1851 versions of the Ohio Constitution for permanent display in the Museum. This the first exhibit of its kind in the United States.
